Teacher talks Kathleens online teaching story

Teacher talks Kathleen’s online teaching story Meet the awesome Kathleen Primeau, a painting enthusiast, novice ukulele player and avid traveler. Kathleen has a multitude of teaching (and life) experience. She holds a Bachelor ofEducation from Nipissing University and over the past five years has taught in the UK as well as one of the most remote parts of Canada - the Northwest Territories. A quick snap in front of some iconic London telephone boxes, taken during Kathleen’s time teaching in the UK. This summer, Kathleen decided to make a return to her home province of Ontario. While she’s on the lookout for a permanent teaching position, Kathleen’s been supply teaching on the side and teaching ESL students, based in China, online. At Teach Away, we’ve been seeing an explosion in the popularity of online English teaching jobs as more and more students - especially in China - gravitate towards learning English online. While we’ve already talked about what you need to get ready to teach online as well as the many benefits of teaching English online in some of our earlier blogs, we were super excited to sit down with Kathleen to find out all about her experience teaching English online with VIPKID over the past year! What first attracted you to teaching English online? There are two things that initially attracted me to teaching English online. The first was that I could work from home, which would eliminate the cost and stress of a commute. The second was that I really wanted to be able to set my own schedule, seeing as I was supply teaching and looking for a full-time teaching job all at the same time. Overall, it looked like a great way for me to supplement my income while I was finding my feet after moving back home. Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. How did you hear about the opportunity to teach English online with VIPKID? I actually saw an ad for VIPKID on Facebook one day. It popped up and my first reaction was “is teaching online really a thing I can do?!” This led me to a Google search, where I discovered some really informative Youtube videos from other teachers working with VIPKID. Those videos gave me the push I needed to apply! What was the application and hiring process with VIPKID like? For me, the application and hiring process was fairly quick. The process consisted of two interviews. All of the interviews are conducted online, through their online portal which is very similar to using FaceTime or Skype. In each interview, I had to perform a teaching task, using the materials VIPKID provided. In my first interview, I taught a mini-lesson to my interviewer, who pretended to be a five-year-old English language learner. The lesson lasted around ten minutes total, so not too tricky. In my second interview, I was asked to teach a full, 25-minute class. This second interview was conducted by a VIPKID teacher mentor - someone with extensive experience teaching online who now mentors new VIPKID teachers. Overall, I think the way the interviews are conducted really does help you figure out if teaching online is something you will enjoy or not. I found it very helpful and I really connected with the VIPKID team. What I really enjoyed was that they give you lots of information, tips and support throughout the entire hiring process. How does the schedule teaching online with VIPKID work? Once you’re hired and you’ve set up your online profile, you’ll be able to access the online scheduler. It’s really simple and intuitive to use. VIPKID also makes it super easy to understand time differences to narrow down the best times to make your teaching schedule open. One thing to keep in mind is that it can take up to a month before you get your first class scheduled. In my case, it took around three weeks before I got my first student, but from that point on, it really picked up and I was getting at least eight (or more) classes booked on a weekly basis. What did you need to get all set up with a virtual classroom of your own? In order to teach with VIPKID you need a computer or laptop, headset and access to a good internet connection. These are the bare necessities you need to start teaching online. VIPKID will also give you a bunch of great tips and advice on how to be an effective online teacher. They offer lots of suggestions on everything from your clothing and teaching props to your lighting and workspace setup. Kathleen’s online teaching backdrop! Although their suggestions aren’t mandatory by any means, they certainly do help you become a more successful teacher - which is a must when you’re looking to build up a substantial student base at the beginning! How often do you work and what’s the pay like with VIPKID? When I first got started teaching English online with VIPKID, I opened up most of my morning schedule (between 5:30 - 10:00 am). At the beginning, I was only getting one to two classes a week. Happily, the number of classes started to pick up fairly quickly around the one month mark. VIPKID’s online scheduler uses a color code system to indicate peak demand times for online teachers, so you can easily open up your timetable during those times if you really want to maximize your earnings. In terms of pay, this is usually established in your first interview. In general, (based on your job performance and past experience) you can expect a base rate of around $14 - 22 USD for one hour of teaching. Most teachers are at the higher end of this range since the pay includes items such as showing up to classes on time. Additionally, VIPKID is constantly offering incentives and bonuses, so a teacher’s actual earning potential is much higher! Any favorite online teaching props, tools or resources you’d like to recommend to aspiring online teachers? Absolutely! I keep a teddy bear and some cheap (and goofy) dollar store props close at hand! These are really great to use at the beginning of lessons to grab your student’s attention and to help any shy students warm up to you a little more. Kathleen’s trusty teddy bear prop. The aforementioned goofy teaching props :) Do you have to do much lesson prep with VIPKID? Lesson prep is super simple and it’s another thing I love about teaching online with VIPKID. They use a specific curriculum they have developed and you teach by following along with a PowerPoint lesson while video chatting with your student. All you have to do is review the lesson beforehand. I typically make a few notes and sometimes I’ll write things out on a whiteboard or piece of paper beforehand. I also try to find real objects to use in my class, instead of pictures. These are easy things that only take a couple of minutes, especially once you become familiar with the lesson styles and formats. What’s your favorite thing about teaching online? For me, the very best thing about teaching online is the students - and getting to work from home! While working one on one with a student and seeing them improve their English skills is really rewarding, being able to do it while still in my pajama pants (which they can’t see, of course!) makes it all the better! What are the top 3 things about working with VIPKID? 1. Being able to work from home. Or wherever I might be on a given day! 2. The flexible schedule. I could get my teaching out of the way before noon and free up the rest of the day to do whatever I wanted. Pretty awesome, right? 3. The students. Not only are they adorable, they’re also very self-motivated. How have you found the experience of teaching students online vs. a physical classroom? Teaching online one on one is definitely different to being in front of a classroom full of kids. If you have some classroom experience though, it will certainly help you in the online teaching environment! One great thing about online teaching is that you work one on one with a student and at their appropriate level (which is already determined for you by VIPKID). One slight con you might encounter is a student that has no interest in the lesson. In instances like these, it can definitely be a bit of a challenge to keep them engaged and learning. On the flipside, this is a great opportunity for you to really hone your classroom management skills. Luckily, that doesn’t happen too often anyway. Overall, I found that VIPKID students tend to be quite enthusiastic! What’s the ONE thing you wish you’d known before becoming an online teacher? Remember that you are teaching students who are across the world! You need to research their holidays and time zones as these will impact the number of bookings you can get at certain times. What advice would you give someone just starting out with teaching online? Give it a good month before you decide whether you like it or not. And don’t fret if you feel like you royally screwed up a lesson! It probably wasn’t as bad as you thought and at least you learned something from it that you can apply to do better in a future lesson. My advice is to practice, practice, practice! The best way to get better delivering your lessons is to practice saying them out loud. Teach to the mirror, teach to your old stuffed toys, teach to your pet - whatever you need to do to get more comfortable! I also recommend you record yourself teaching on your phone. Doing this will boost your confidence AND your teaching skills, which will make your online teaching experience so much smoother and more enjoyable. Finally, don’t forget to laugh! A VIPKID lesson, although it’s packed with plenty of learning, shouldn't feel like a slog for you or for your student. VIPKID wants you to project energy, excitement and happiness - which is contagious for your students. And don’t be afraid to get silly, your students will love you for it! We want to give massive props to Kathleen for sharing her perspective on teaching online with VIPKID. We hope you found it insightful - let us know your thoughts in the comments below! Pumped to apply to teach online with VIPKID? We thought so! Check out the VIPKID job posting here.

How to Use Rubrics to Get Perfect Grades - TutorNerds

How to Use Rubrics to Get Perfect Grades - TutorNerds Tips From an Anaheim Private Tutor: How to Use Rubrics to Get Perfect Grades Tips From an Anaheim Private Tutor: How to Use Rubrics to Get Perfect Grades You are likely familiar with grading rubrics from many of your classes.   Whether it’s for an English essay, a history project, a science lab report, or an open-ended math test, rubrics are ever-present in classrooms.   Rubrics are used for two main purposes: to provide a guideline to help teachers grade students fairly and consistently, and to allow students to understand better their grade and how they could have improved it. Without a rubric, grading can be more subjective, and grades can be harder to understand.   Have you ever gotten a graded essay back with just a big “80” circled in red with no other marks on it?   It can be frustrating to receive grades without also receiving feedback on why you got a certain grade.   A rubric is one common method of remedying this situation. However, a rubric can be a valuable tool even before your work is graded.   Ideally, you should not be waiting to have your assignment returned before checking the designations on the rubric.   Instead, you should be proactively using the rubric to guarantee you receive the best score (dont wait for your first failed test to book your private in-home Anaheim tutor). Look at the real rubric below for a secondary school art project: Here, we have five criteria and five different levels for each (a 55 rubric).   We can see that students will be graded on creativity, use of elements and principles, craftsmanship, understanding and completion, and effort and participation.   We can also see how this project will be graded based on points: each category has a maximum of 20 points for a total of 100. As a student, you should be focused on the points and the descriptions of the top point categories.   Doing this can help you notice where points are allocated in places you might not expect.   For example, to earn the full 20 points in effort and participation, you must have “participated in all class discussion” as opposed to the “participated in the most class discussion” in the 15-point category.   You may not have realized this about the art project, but failing to participate in class could lose you up to 20 points on your art project that you didn’t realize required participation. Similarly, we could pick up on other cues in the 20-point categories, such as “exceptional care and attention to detail,” “explores several different options,” and “complete and consistent.”   These may not have been factors you were considering when beginning the project.   However, you can now use these to help craft an ideal project.   It is important to know, for example, that your neatness and carefulness accounts for the same point total as your overall creativity. These tactics follow for other rubrics, as well.   Many teachers even include concrete criteria, such as “includes three examples of figurative language,” “has two or fewer spelling and grammar mistakes,” or “clearly lists all relevant equations at the start of the problem.”   These are what you should be taking advantage of.   Your teacher will be referring to the rubric while grading, so you want to make it as easy as possible for them to see that you are in the top categories. For the example are rubric above, you would want to make sure that your teacher can see: 1. That you had a unique idea or that you took risks and used several options, 2. That you understand and utilized elements, you learned in class, 3. That your work is neat and has fine details, 4. That you followed and completed the assignment thoroughly, and 5. That you participated in every class and visibly strived for success. This may seem like restating the rubric, but the idea is to focus on as many concrete, literal ideas as you can â€" even for something as subjective as an art project.   Your job is to make it obvious to the teacher which category your work should be in.   This may mean adding or altering your work to make certain areas more clearly fit the rubric.   Remember, a project, essay, or answer doesn’t have to follow a rubric can still be a great piece of work â€" but if you want the easiest path to the best grade, the rubric is where you should be looking from the start. Top Tips For Using A Good Chemistry Application Form

Top Tips For Using A Good Chemistry Application FormStudents of Chemistry and students of other subjects must use a good chemistry application form if they want to get the most out of their study. While taking Chemistry, students should also be aware of the top tips on using a good application form. Many students have a very hard time applying for tests or make an early application but fail at the test due to lack of preparation. This article will discuss some tips on preparing for the test with proper preparation.First of all, your application form should be able to teach you how to format your application. The application should instruct you to create an excel sheet with all of your application form questions that you need to answer and questions that are asked. It should also include the choices and topics that you can select to be included in your test. Most test takers do not understand the difference between a sample and an exam and therefore they never take a good look at them. A sample will ask questions in the form of a test question, where you can fill in any information needed. An exam will ask you to answer these questions based on the answer that you select.Next, do not forget to take the time to identify the test topics that you do not know about. Even if you have taken a science course before, it is important to make sure that you are familiar with the chemistry topics you need to know. If you are unsure about a specific chemistry topic, you should be able to remember the answers that you think they are. Finally, prepare yourself by providing your own samples of work that you have done before the test. Some people who are afraid of failure do not want to admit they have had little or no previous experience with chemistry and so they do not feel comfortable going through the process of preparing for a test. The good application form will help you prepare yourself for the test by answering the questions you should have answered before. Also, the test may ask you to send information to a laboratory or a lab manager so be sure to check with the test's instructions to see what exactly is expected of you. Many students make the mistake of thinking that just because they have taken the test they know what they are doing. They should make sure that they are properly prepared for the test in advance so that they can go into the test ready to learn. This way, they will feel confident that they can succeed at the test and they will have a better chance of passing the test and getting the high grades that they deserve.

Should I Go To University of Southern California The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Emily is a Los Angeles tutor specializing in SAT prep tutoring, Mandarin Chinese tutoring, Biology tutoring, and more. She is currently a senior at University of Southern California majoring in Business Administration. See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Emily: University of Southern California is located in downtown Los Angeles. We have a compact university campus in the downtown location and also another location for our medical school. Students usually ride bicycles or walk to classes. The campus environment is relatively safe and transportation to LA Live, the beach, and tourist locations is pretty convenient. There are many buses and a train stop around the campus which creates more convenience for students. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Emily: Professors and TAs are very accessible to students. Academic advisers are both on appointment and walk-in basis. Students can also reach out to advisers through emails and phone calls. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Emily: USC has typical college dorms but with multiple options, varied by locations and styles inside. Students can buy meal plans and eat on campus we have two main cafeterias and a food court campus center with retail vendors. There are many social opportunities since we have more than 100 student organizations on campus and a Greek system. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Emily: USC has strong Business and Accounting programs. Every year, many top students from these two programs get recruited to Fortune 500 companies. My major is Business Administration due to my strong interest in finance and management. The school provides many great programs and alumni networks to support me and get me a full-time offer eventually. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Emily: Its not hard at all. USC has one of the strongest Greek cultures among campuses in the U.S. and the school is supportive of the Greek system. As a freshman, everyone is open to making friends and exploring the campus and city of Los Angeles together. Freshmen and transfer students are also welcome to join any student organizations on campus where you can meet a lot of interesting people coming from very diverse cultural backgrounds. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Emily: The USC Career Center and many student organizations are very supportive of students during the recruitment process. Students are encouraged to take internships as early as freshman year. Many leading and top Fortune 500 companies are recruiting on campus, such as Bain, BCG, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, and so on. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Emily: The main library, Leavey, is open 24/7. The student union operates on a normal work-hour schedule, also depending on each offices separate operating hours. Dorm lounges are open all the time to all residents. During study times, libraries are usually packed with students but study rooms are also available for online reservations ahead of time. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Emily: USC provides shuttles on weekdays to downtown LA Live where most restaurants, City Target, and movie theaters are located. The transportation from campus to downtown is very convenient and there are shopping malls, cafes, restaurants, and other entertainment in the downtown area as well. Many students like to go to downtown for fun activities, especially during the weekends. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Emily:The student body is big and we have one of the largest international study bodies in the U.S. Class sizes are relatively small, surprisingly, except for some fundamental classes where 100 students are expected to attend a lecture class. Im pleased with the class sizes overall. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Emily: My most memorable experience at USC was my class with a Harvard graduate professor for an investment class. He explained the stock market and investment methods from a sociological perspective that was different from the conventional angle. USC has many top scholars in the field and continually opens classes like this to create new opportunities for students to explore areas that we are interested in. Check out Emilys tutoring profile.
